The public is requested not to travel on this road yet.

Temporary repairs to the R102 in Scottburgh, near the GJ Crookes Hospital is nearing completion, but the road has not been reopened to the public as yet.

Construction has been under way for the past few weeks after the flooding in April caused both lanes to collapse. Workers are busy with the last phase of construction.

Several motorists have attempted to drive on the road after the collapsed section was backfilled. It is dangerous as the road is unsafe, and the public is asked to be patient.

Ward 15 councillor, Shara Singh has been updating the community on the progress of the repairs via social media.

“I have been in regular communication with Department of Transport (DoT) officials since the road collapsed in April,” she said.

As per the DoT official, the asphalting was scheduled to be done on Monday, August 1 and the road reopened on Wednesday, August 3, however, this did not happen due to procurement issues with the asphalt.

The road is almost ready to be reopened.

“The official has now stated that the asphalt has been secured and the work will be undertaken on Wednesday (August 10) this week – weather permitting,” added Singh.

However, she said it is unacceptable that a request for proper signage on this stretch of road has had no positive response.

“This has resulted in a number of motorists crashing into the bollards. Equally unacceptable is the number of vehicles, especially taxis using this road while the repairs are not complete.”

The contractor for the culverts, sidewalks and gabion wall has not been appointed as yet, as the procurement process is still being finalised.

The public is reminded to be cautious when approaching this area and to wait until repairs are complete.
