The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works is making progress with the resurfacing of the R27 from Milnerton to Melkbosstrand.

The R71 million project started in April 2015, and is scheduled for completion in early 2016. Edge break repairs and the supplementing of gravel shoulders will continue between the intersections of Melkbosstrand Road and Tryall Road. The resurfacing of the northbound carriageway has been completed on both lanes between the intersections of Racecourse Road and Marine Drive.

The milling and backfilling of patches for base repairs have started on the southbound carriageway between the intersections of Marine Drive and Bay Beach Avenue. The resurfacing of this carriageway will only start once all base patching has been completed up to Racecourse Road intersection.

Culverts are being cleaned and broken kerbs, channels and chutes are being replaced on both north– and southbound carriageways between the intersections of Porterfield/ Link Road and Racecourse Road. Mole barriers are being installed between the intersections of Sandown Road and Link Road.

Possible delays

The heavy rains experienced during the winter months, decreased visibility due to mist and down-pours as well as cold ambient temperatures can influence the planned construction activities. Load shedding may influence the batching of asphalt at the supplier’s plant. Generators will be used where possible.

Road and access closures

Localised shoulder closures will be used between the intersections of Tryall Road and Melkbosstrand Road. Lanes will be merged on the southbound carriageway between the intersections of Blaauwberg Road and Marine Drive, but both lanes will be open to traffic during the morning peak-hour (06:00 – 10:00).

General traffic accommodation

Motorists are requested, for the sake of their own safety as well as for that of construction workers, to obey all traffic instructions including speed limits, and to drive carefully. Road conditions change daily as work progresses and motorists should be vigilant when driving along sections that are under construction.

Empowerment

The Department is creating a number employment opportunities through the project. Eight percent (8%) of the contract value is expected to go towards targeted enterprises in the Western Cape, while 7000 person days will be created.
