Boulders taxi rank at Market Street and Old Pretoria Main Road faces dire conditions, with potholes deepening, yet the JRA is still not coming to the party as promised.

Boulders taxi rank, located on Market Street and Old Pretoria Main Road, continues to be plagued by a lack of maintenance and attention from Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

This is after numerous complaints and media enquiries have been sent out to them.

Taxi drivers and owners operating around the Boulders taxi rank say the worsening conditions and big potholes continue to make it hard for them to work and drive around the roads next to the rank.

In an article titled, Bold hostility at Boulders [week ending March 27], JRA stated that repairs were scheduled for April, but as the month draws to a close, drivers have been stating that they have not seen any sign of JRA coming to do repairs.

Everyday road users, particularly taxi drivers, are frustrated by this, since the scheduled repairs got them hopeful. Unfortunately, now drivers have lost all hope that repairs will ever be done.

Eric Maseko, a taxi driver at the rank, said: “Honestly, these roads are just bad.

I mean, recently one of our taxis drove into a pothole, and when it’s raining this problem becomes worse because the potholes get flooded with water which causes us to struggle with driving.

At this point, listening to what the JRA is saying is something we’ve stopped doing, because it’s like they don’t see how serious this is.”

JRA was contacted on April 17 by the Midrand Reporter regarding the scheduled repairs and why they are still not done.

A response was received on April 20 from JRA communications specialist Mosa Makhalima, saying she has checked with the depot and is awaiting a response. A follow-up was then made on April 28, but we didn’t receive any further response from the depot nor the JRA.
