GVK-Siya Zama recently walked away with five awards from the National Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) Competition, held at the recent Master Builders South Africa (MBSA) Congress.

The annual competition, which has been running since 1963, encourages construction companies to enter sites in 10 different categories for scrutiny on both administrative legal compliance and physical legal compliance by independent auditors.

GVK-Siya Zama’s wins included first place prizes for the Alexandra Provincial Precinct site in Cape Town and Aloe Ridge Hotel site in Johannesburg.

Regional accolades

The MBA Western Cape recently revealed the results of its regional competition at its prize-giving ceremony, where GVK-Siya Zama was named Health and Safety Company of the Year in the Western Cape for the second year in a row. The firm also took home six awards for various project sites across the province. These complement the five won at MBA North’s event earlier this year as well as the two at the East Cape MBA’s function held in August.

Craig Laskey, the company’s regional (Western Cape) health, safety and environmental (HSE) manager, says: “We performed well at last year’s regional and national OH&S competitions and this time we have done even better. I am particularly proud of our regions who have achieved national wins, it is heartening to see that we are developing a strong health and safety culture across all our operations and I believe that this is because our employees are gaining greater understanding of the fact that a safe site is a productive site.”
