Ferndale on Republic Mall, Randburg, Johannesburg

Focus on community shopping

Initially built as the once-famous Randburg Waterfront, and then for a period known as Bright Water Commons, Ferndale on Republic Mall has recently been completed. Developed by the Moolman Group and built by Probest Projects, the large-scale mixed-use redevelopment and expansion has resulted in an upmarket offering.

GEZE South Africa was awarded the supply of 90% of the ironmongery for the mall and individual stores, including fire-doors for the public areas, which offer quick-opening in the event of an
emergency.

Challenges mean progress too.

In a large-scale project with multiple sub-contractors and high time pressures, communication between all parties is key. “In the building of Ferndale on Republic, our communication would have
been aided by enhanced on-site presence, because more than most, this project presented challenges for us,” remarks Kevin Diamond, MD of GEZE Southern Africa. “We discovered that even in cases of supply-only, it helps enormously to have someone who can get to the site as soon as the client requests it.”

Ivan Walker of Probest Projects support this view, “When doors or ironmongery arrived on site, it would have been useful to have a GEZE person there to unpack and check them to immediately
resolve any questions or problems right there and then”.

Communication is key to solving tasks timeously

To GEZE’s credit, the company met with Probest Projects at an executive level to understand their frustrations, and overcome delivery challenges based on feedback.

The net effect was a project that was completed on schedule, with minimal snags. Ivan Walker comments, “Once the issues were escalated to GEZE’s Executive, they were resolved. GEZE took our concerns seriously, with the MD personally getting involved in sorting out what needed to be done.”

‘Ferndale on Republic was a formative project for GEZE”, says Kevin Diamond, “We feel that it is important that we take responsibility for what matters to our customers, and that we take proactive action to deliver this. We are grateful that our client worked together with us on this project to ultimately improve our offering and service.”
