JOHANNESBURG - As the gloom of power cuts continues, some hopeful news on the power generation front.
Eskom has confirmed that 18 companies have been selected to lease Eskom land and build private renewable energy projects in Mpumalanga.
In total, the companies could ultimately add 1,800 megawatts of generation capacity to our grid.
At this stage, no contracts have been signed as the companies must first obtain environmental impact assessment clearance.
But the power utility is hoping this process can be done swiftly and are optimistic the land lease contracts will be signed by August.
Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter says the additional capacity will be added to the grid without any cost to the taxpayer.
The projects will enter into sale agreements for the electricity with third parties.
