Construction has begun on The Granger, a R2 billion mixed-use development adjacent to the DHL Stadium in Green Point, Cape Town.
The project, which broke ground on 6 November, is expected to transform one of the last major undeveloped sites between the central business district and the Atlantic Seaboard.
Construction is expected to continue through 2027, with completion targeted for early 2028.
The Granger is positioned to become a new focal point for business, hospitality and urban living near the city’s western waterfront. It is not related to the V&A Waterfront’s multi-billion-rand Granger Bay development.
Developed through a joint venture between Devmark Property Group and the Feenstra Group, The Granger will comprise a 190-room international hotel, 200 apartments, 14 000m2 of P-grade office space, and 3 000m2 of retail space.
James Vos, the City of Cape Town’s mayoral committee member for economic growth, says the project will “transform” the surrounding precinct into a “vibrant, connected” urban space.
“My department worked hard to facilitate this transaction because it’s exactly the kind of development that creates jobs, attracts investment and supports small businesses,” Vos adds.
Hein Ehlers, executive chair of Devmark Property Group, says the new development is intended to complement the existing sports and entertainment hub.
“The DHL Stadium currently attracts around 1.2 million visitors annually, hosting major sporting events, concerts and conferences.”
Pieter Feenstra, CEO of Pretoria-based Feenstra Group, adds that The Granger will help integrate the stadium precinct with surrounding commercial and residential areas.
“The stadium is already a major asset, but presently feels a bit isolated,” he says. “By integrating hotels, retail and office spaces, The Granger will transform the area.”
Waterfront developments
The start of construction on The Granger coincides with broader development momentum along Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard, particularly around the V&A Waterfront.
Moneyweb reported earlier that the precinct – jointly owned by Growthpoint Properties and the Public Investment Corporation – is undergoing a R20 billion Granger Bay extension, including marine reclamation works, a new luxury hotel and an expansion of the mall.
The Waterfront project will see the reclamation of around 3.2 hectares of land from Table Bay – equivalent to nearly five football fields – to accommodate new residential, retail and leisure components.
This includes a R1.35 billion, 142-key super-luxury hotel, due to open in March 2026, and a R901 million refurbishment of The Table Bay Hotel, which will reopen as the InterContinental Table Bay under Sun International’s management.
Additional developments include a R700 million residential project at 5 Dock Road and a R200 million expansion of the Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre’s upper wing.
