The Bushbuckridge Local Municipality is ready to fix the property damage allegedly done by members of the Bushbuckridge Chamber of Business during a recent fight regarding the employment issues of Mapulaneng Hospital. “The municipality will be replacing the damaged property by the end of next week,” said Claiton Khoza, its spokesperson. Khoza’s statement follows the recent damage of the executive entrance of the municipality, allegedly by a group of angry members of the Bushbuckridge Chamber of Business who overpowered security guards and stormed in the municipal offices, demanding answers regarding the ongoing construction at the new hospital.

According to a reliable source, the group was part of a meeting at a sportsfield regarding the proceedings of the construction. They were apparently angered by the hiring of employees, among other issues. “Allegations were that the locals were overlooked and not hired for the project, but job offers were made for people from outside places. It was also alleged that the people were paid R190 per day, which was far less than the minimum prescribed daily rate of R250.

The people became more angry  when they learned that even the contractor was not aware of these dodgy payments. Members of the chamber and some locals then went to the municipal offices to demand answers from the local councillor and the chief whip, whom they accused of interfering with the project,” explained the source. The people forced their entry in the offices and damaging the property in the process. “The issues they raised includes alleging the chief whip interferes in the appointment of labourers, and the mobilisation of groupings to protests and derail work which the municipality has nothing to do with,” added Khoza.
