About 1 000 of the 3 000 workers who embarked on an unprotected strike on Wednesday were fired by their employers. Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe told Moneyweb that there were incidents of intimidation and stone throwing during the strike. Some of the workers have previously received written warnings for similar conduct and were therefore fired. He said the number may increase.

Phasiwe said Eskom met with contractors yesterday to consider the workers’ demands and feedback will be given to the unions today. He said about 8 000 blue collar workers were yesterday requested by Eskom and their employers to stay at home in order to give management an opportunity to assess the damage and ensure that conditions are restored that are conducive to resume operations. Today the site is open again.

Phasiwe said contractors will have to see how they deal with the gap left by the fired workers and that it is too early to know what the impact will be on productivity and how long it will take to either replace the workers or adjsut to their absence.
